What does this mild March-in-January weather mean for Central VA gardens? I see Star Magnolias in bloom and Elms pushing out, some insects are active, and some weeds are already flowering and setting seeds. Woody plants have not really had time to 'harden off' for winter yet. In case of a harsh cold snap, we recommend extra protection for the more tender plants in your garden.
Extra loose mulch over your taro, canna lilies, bananas and the like will insulate them from sudden freezing. Woody plants that may suffer die back can be wrapped or insulated with loose leaf piles.
Don't forget, we are scheduling 'Winter Clean-ups' right now. Call early to get the date you want!
Now is also the time to schedule a visit with one of our talented team members. Our designers can create a master plan to install this winter, or in phases (as time and budget allow).
